A Utah bill of sale is a form that records the sale or trade of an item from one person to another. Like a standard retail receipt, a bill of sale proves that personal property has been transferred ownership between two people. To protect yourself, you should use a bill of sale in the state of Utah when transferring a car, boat, motorcycle, gun, or animal.

Requirements
The Utah Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) requires a bill of sale to register and title a vehicle or vessel purchased in a private party transaction. The buyer must keep an original copy of the document, and the seller must sign over any title or ownership to the new owner.
Language and Copy Requirements
- Language: DMV forms, including bills of sale, are not written in Spanish or any other language. However, you may provide your own interpreter to translate forms as long as they meet the state’s requirements. There is also a directory of translators online that are pre-approved by the state.
- Number of Copies: Because a bill of sale is required to sell and purchase a vehicle privately in Utah, you must submit a copy to the DMV. The buyer and seller should also retain a copy if they need to reference it later.
